Michael J. Quillen

Michael J. Quillen has been involved in the coal and energy business for over four decades along with an equal amount of time in economic development in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee. Mr. Quillen currently serves on the board of two New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) companies. Martin Marietta Materials (MLM) where he serves as chair of the Finance Committee and on the Compensation Committee. He also serves as Lead Independent Director for Alpha Metallurgical Resources (AMR) and chairs the Compensation Committee plus serves on the Nominating and Governance Committee. Mr. Quillen serves on the Ballad Health Finance Committee and the Ballad Audit Committee. Mr. Quillen is Chair of the SWVA Energy Advisory Council and serves on the GO VA Region One council having been chair from 2017-2019. Mr. Quillen also serves on the Mountain Mission Board in Grundy VA.

Mr. Quillen manages Quillen Properties LLC, MJQ LLC and CHM Holdings LLC and serves as an advisor on mining, energy, economic development and transportation issues. He has served on the Board of Visitors of VA Tech 2010-2018 and was Rector 2013-2014 and on the VA Port Authority 2003-2012 and was Chairman 2011-2012. Mr. Quillen founded Alpha Natural Resources in 2002 and was chief executive officer and Chairman until 2012. He was also one of the founders of Whitehaven Coal Company in Australia in 1999 where he was a member of the Board and held senior leadership positions. Mr. Quillen has served in several other senior roles including vice president of operations at American Metal & Coal International and president of coal sales for Pittston Coal Company.

Mr. Quillen earned a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s Degree, both in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University which awarded him the William H. Ruffner Medal in 2020, the University’s highest honor. Mr. Quillen achieved Professional Engineering certification in VA, TN, WV and KY.

Mr. Quillen has received numerous awards over his career in addition to the Ruffner Medal which includes the Bristol Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2020, the Virginia Business Magazine Businessman of the Year in 2012 and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year-Greater Washington Area Winner in Energy in 2006.

Mr. Quillen resides in Washington County, Virginia with his wife Debbie and together they enjoy their 16 grandchildren.
