Health benefits of weight-loss
Weight loss can improve so many different aspects of your health, some of which you might not expect. Losing just 10% of an obese person’s body weight can help the following:
- Decrease in overall blood pressure
- Improved cholesterol levels
- Better control over blood sugars
Beyond 10% weight-loss
- Obstructive sleep apnea is often improved
- Decreased pressure on joints
- Individuals experience easier breathing
Additional weight loss
- Often eliminates the need for diabetes and blood pressure medication
- Frequently relieves heartburn and gastrointestinal discomfort
People who have lost weight generally feel more positive about themselves as their daily life and average life expectancy have improved.
Obesity measurement in adults
While there are a few different ways to calculate obesity, the most common metric is body mass index (BMI). This number is easily calculated by using your height and weight, and it is used as a guideline because it tends to correlate with the amount of body fat for most people. BMI helps us start evaluating weight-related risks to your health.

Bariatric support groups
Weight-loss surgery isn’t just a quick, one-time fix. It requires lifelong adjustments of diet and activity. Our team is here to help you, but changing habits is hard for anyone. That’s why we have weight-loss surgery support groups to help you with your weight-loss journey.
Bariatric support group meetings are held at Greeneville Community Hospital monthly in classroom A on the 5th floor of the hospital. Unless otherwise noted these begin at 5:00 pm with weigh-in and measurement and the meeting begins at 5:30 pm. These support group meetings are held on an alternate schedule from virtual and in-person meetings.
Topics vary from month to month and we make sure that they touch on what the group needs. Past topics include managing weight-loss surgery side effects, what to expect after gastric sleeve surgery and dealing with weight-loss surgery side effects. Each year recommendations for topics and activities are drawn from the comments of participating members of the bariatric support group.
