Lung Cancer Treatments

The two main types of lung cancer are non-small cell and small cell. Your personal treatment plan will depend on your lung cancer diagnosis and stage of development. Treatment typically involves different combinations of:

  • Cancer medicines, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hormone therapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgery
  • Targeted therapy

Lung Cancer Surgery

Partner with Ballad Health when you need surgery for lung cancer. To remove cancerous lung tissue, your doctor may use procedures such as:

  • Wedge resection – Removes a specific area of cancerous tissue from the lung
  • Lobectomy – Takes an entire lobe off the lung
  • Pneumonectomy – Removes the whole lung

Minimally Invasive Cancer Surgery

Whenever possible, your Ballad Health doctors use minimally invasive techniques to diagnose, define and treat your cancer. That means you’re likely to experience less pain and a faster recovery.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive surgical technique to diagnose and treat lung cancer.

During VATS, your doctor will make a small incision and use a tiny camera, or thoracoscope, to send images to a video monitor. The images guide your doctor to perform your lung surgery.

Improve your health and decrease your chance of getting cancer with the help of a Ballad Health smoking cessation program.
