Surgical Services at Franklin Woods

Franklin Woods Community Hospital (FWCH) offers a wide range of general and specialty surgical services – for both inpatients and same day/outpatients including many minimally invasive surgical procedures using technically advanced robotic surgical systems.

FWCH’s state-of-the-art operating rooms and some of the region’s only specially trained surgeons in robotic surgery offer the best in surgical options and quick recovery for patients.

Millions of Americans undergo surgery each year. It is important that you are an informed patient, and that you feel comfortable about the procedure you will be having. At Franklin Woods, we encourage all our patients to ask questions of their medical team, and to be a well-informed patient.

Minimally invasive surgery

Our newest surgical robotic system, the da Vinci® Xi, is making surgery more effective and less invasive for our patients and easier on surgeons.

Using this system, our surgeons operate through small incisions using a magnified high-definition 3D view inside the body and tiny instruments that bend and rotate.

These features enable our surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control resulting in:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less pain
  • Faster healing, and
  • Less scarring

Colorectal surgery

Franklin Woods is the third hospital in the nation and the first in Tennessee to receive the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval® for minimally invasive colorectal surgery.

Colorectal disease can be a chronic, life-altering illness, and surgery can bring people back to a state of well-being.

Last October, a group of surgeons and team members came together to develop a colorectal program with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Recognizing the importance of patient involvement in the care process, the team developed a clinical pathway that puts the patient at the forefront of their surgical journey.

Ear, nose and throat surgery

One of the surgical specialties offered at FWCH is ear, nose and throat surgery. Our surgeons can perform image-guided sinus surgeries, using CT scans to help them see where they are working.

People who have had a previous sinus surgery often cannot have another one because the usual “landmarks” have changed.

But now, image-guided sinus surgery allows many of these patients to have needed surgery again. With this technology, both repeat and new surgery is much safer for these patients.

FWCH’s nerve integrity monitoring system (NIMS) allows surgeons to operate on a patient’s thyroid, parathyroid or parotid gland without causing damage to the nerves in the face. The system has sensors that go off to let the surgeons know if they get too close to the nerves.

Urology surgery

FWCH urology services include laser resection of the prostate using the Holmium Laser, a minimally invasive treatment that uses laser energy to relieve enlarged prostate symptoms.

The benefits of this surgery include:

  • Lower risk of infection
  • No surgical incision
  • Shorter recovery times

Patients usually can resume normal activities within a week.
