Ballad Health, American Red Cross Partner to Bring Comfort, Support After Hurricane Helene

Pet therapy for people affected by Hurricane Helene

As part of a special initiative to support individuals and families affected by Hurricane Helene, Ballad Health, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, is introducing Polar, a certified facility dog from United Disabilities Services, to offer comfort, warmth and unconditional support to communities in need.

Polar, an 8-year-old yellow Labrador retriever from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has dedicated his life to providing therapeutic support. Alongside his handler, Melissa, Polar has been part of the Breaking Free Counseling team for five years, where he greets clients as “friends,” offering a safe, grounding presence to help them process trauma and navigate challenging emotions.

Known for his gentle spirit and friendly demeanor, Polar’s favorite interventions include greeting clients with a warm hello, offering snuggles and sharing his unconditional love. His presence offers a comforting environment for anyone seeking support during difficult times.

Polar and Melissa will tour communities affected by the hurricane, providing therapeutic support and comfort to individuals, families and first responders. This tour offers a chance to experience Polar’s unique ability to lift spirits and bring calm to those struggling with the aftermath of the storm.

We encourage everyone affected by Hurricane Helene to join us, connect with Polar and experience the support and comfort he brings. Polar and Melissa will be at the following locations this weekend:
