Children’s Author Holds Book Signing to Support Cancer Care at Norton Community Hospital

NORTON, VA. — Elizabeth Fletcher, a respected children’s author, will hold a book signing event at Norton Community Hospital on Thursday, July 18, at 11 a.m. As her most recent book handles children’s understanding of cancer, proceeds from the event will support Ballad Health Cancer Care in Norton, Virginia.

Fletcher’s book, “Why is Ginny Anne Crying, Lincoln McCarthy?” was written in memory of Maddie Davis from Hampton, Virginia, who died of brain cancer in 2020. Maddie’s story inspired the story of Ginny Anne, the book’s protagonist, whose mother is battling cancer. Throughout the book, readers are taken on a journey of the emotional ups and downs of a 6-year-old understanding more about cancer and its effects.

“I am honored to host this book signing to raise awareness about children’s encounters with cancer,” said Fletcher, a native of Wise, Virginia. “This event is an opportunity to share stories that demonstrate the bravery and resilience of children who are dealing with cancer, both directly and indirectly. Through my book, I hope to provide comfort and insight into the challenges faced by these children and their families. Cancer impacts not just the patient but the entire family, and it is crucial that we understand and support their journey.”

The book signing will begin at 11 a.m. on the patio of Norton Community Hospital, 100 15th St. NW, Norton, Virginia.

“We are excited to host this special event dedicated to raising awareness about children’s experiences with cancer,” said Shannon Showalter, chief executive officer for Ballad Health operations in Wise, Lee and Dickenson counties. “Events like these underscores the importance of supporting patients and their families through challenging times, especially when children are involved. Cancer affects not only the individual but also loved ones, and it is crucial we provide comprehensive care and understanding. We appreciate the work Elizabeth is doing to help families navigate those journeys and raise funds for Ballad Health Cancer Care, enabling us to continue offering high-quality care and support.”

Funds raised through the event will augment work being done through Ballad Health Foundation, which administers a fund to help patients in need receive assistance for cancer-associated expenses not covered by insurance, such as medications, groceries, personal care items, gas, housing and utilities.

Ballad Health Foundation’s cancer support

“Ballad Health Foundation provides crucial support to cancer patients and their families, alleviating some of the financial burdens that come with a cancer diagnosis,” said Jack Simpson, president of Ballad Health Foundation. “We appreciate Elizabeth participating in this event to help raise awareness and funds for this crucial service. We invite donors to contribute to Ballad Health Foundation’s Cancer Support and Assistance Funds, as their generous support can make a significant difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families by helping cover essential non-medical expenses. Every dollar counts in our mission to provide comprehensive support to those battling cancer.”

With more than 20 years of experience teaching in Virginia schools, Fletcher currently serves as an education specialist in the private sector. Her diverse roles in education include serving as a classroom teacher, Title I and Reading Recovery teacher, educational diagnostician, administrative reading specialist, assistant principal, adjunct professor and drum major coach.
