Welcome to Niswonger Children’s Hospital

We believe that seeing a kite lift from the ground and flutter in the breeze is a sign of hope and healing. The children and teens we serve at Niswonger Children’s Hospital are the future of this region. We work every day to be the place that makes kites fly, to help and heal the young people of this region – and, ultimately, to make hope rise.

Expanding Niswonger Children’s Hospital

With a generous donation from a donor in Bristol, Virginia, Ballad Health will be opening a new center for pediatric specialists at Niswonger Children’s Hospital. The J.D. Nicewonder Family Perinatal and Pediatric Institute will be located in a medical office building adjacent to the hospital and will open in late 2024 with expanded access for our patients. This expansion will create an environment where our pediatric specialists can work more collaboratively as they manage the care of children throughout our region.

After the Hope Rising capital campaign, over $30 million was raised to add two floors to the top of Niswonger Children’s Hospital. When complete, this new Regional Center for Perinatal and Neonatal Care will house the newest neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in both Tennessee and Virginia, providing 40 private rooms for infants and their families. Construction is slated to be completed at the end of 2026.

You can see some renderings of this expansion project here.

High tech and welcoming

As the only children’s hospital in the region, Niswonger Children’s Hospital offers you state-of-the-art medical care in a family-centered environment.

Our cheerful and bright hospital is designed to let children receive excellent care in a light-filled, supportive and high-tech environment.

Our pediatric-trained physicians and team members provide exceptional medical care, using the latest technology.

Designed for families

We recognize that caring for a hospitalized child involves the entire family. That is why our hospital was designed with families in mind.

Pediatric patients need spaces to play, grow and heal, while caregivers need space to rest, relax and recharge.

We invite you to take advantage of the many amenities and family support areas available at Niswonger Children’s Hospital, as well as at our parent hospital, Johnson City Medical Center.
