Spiritual health classes and programs

At the Center for Spiritual Health, we believe that addressing the spiritual well-being of individuals is an essential part of comprehensive healthcare. We're committed to training seminary students and volunteer chaplains on how to provide spiritual care in a healthcare setting.

We offer a variety of programs for spiritual health training, including:

  • Field training for seminary students
  • Clinical pastoral education accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education
  • Summer internships
  • Volunteer hospital chaplain training

Clinical Pastoral Education program

The Center for Spiritual Health offers a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program at Johnson City Medical Center. This program combines academic study and supervised clinical practice to equip you with the necessary skills for compassionate spiritual care.

Summer internship

The summer unit is offered as an intensive, 12-week, full-time training that is conducted from June to August. This unit is designed for full-time seminarians and laypersons who are prepared to engage and complete the CPE training in a reasonably short time.

Field training for seminary students

The Center for Spiritual Health serves as a field education site for seminary or divinity school students interested in spiritual health and spiritual care in a hospital setting. This placement is called Clinical Supervised Ministry.

Over the course of 8 to 10 weeks, Clinical Supervised Ministry includes:

  • 100 hours of clinical work
  • About 50 hours of group meetings such as case conferences, seminars and supervisory sessions

This course is designed for the seminary student; however, we also accept individuals, after a group interview and consultation, who are interested in learning more about clinical pastoral education. This course prepares students for our Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program.

Volunteer training

Spiritual Health volunteers serve as a resource of hospitality to patients, their families and our fellow team members. They assist our staff of full-time professional chaplains to make sure we are able to address spiritual needs throughout Ballad Health.
