Dr. S. Hughes Melton Family Medicine Residency Program

The Dr. S. Hughes Melton Family Medicine Residency Program at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia, is committed to providing advanced, innovative and specialized training in family medicine.

This program gives residents the opportunity to work one-on-one with attending physicians, as well as the support and guidance to pursue the family medicine specialty that’s right for them. When your residency training is completed, you’ll be well prepared to serve any community and care for diverse populations as a licensed physician.  

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Johnston Memorial Hospital offers six openings per year for new residents.

Curriculum

Our residency programs feature a longitudinal training experience where participants learn the skills required to provide all-inclusive care to patients of all ages.

Continuity of care experience will be longitudinal at the continuity of care site over the three years of training.

Long-term care experience will be in PGY-2 and PGY-3 and will include at least monthly experiences in a geriatric care setting that will fulfill the ACGME requirement of long-term care experiences occurring over a minimum of 24 months.

Didactics will be held weekly and will include four hours of core conference lectures. Didactic lectures will include content from all specialties/components of the curriculum.

Affiliation & accreditation

Johnston Memorial Hospital is affiliated with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA, by providing VCOM medical students clinical clerkships to complete their medical education.

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
