Welcome to the Ballad Health Pharmacy Residency program at Holston Valley Medical Center (HVMC). Our program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy education by giving residents the experience of serving a growing community with diverse needs. We offer a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency.

Partnering with and serving the Kingsport community for more than 80 years, HVMC is a 505-bed facility which houses a Level III trauma center and high-quality, nationally-recognized care. HVMC is part of Ballad Health, an integrated healthcare delivery system serving 29 counties in Northeastern Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia, Northwestern North Carolina and Southeastern Kentucky.

ASHP Residency Accreditation

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program began in 2010 and is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

HVMC also serves as a practice site for introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences for Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University.

Our purpose

Residents who successfully complete our PGY1 residency program will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership and education and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS) and pursue advanced education and training opportunities, including PGY2 residencies.

Program details

The department of pharmacy services has a progressive practice model with centralized clinical pharmacists, decentralized clinical pharmacists and clinical pharmacy specialists. Pharmacy practice is supported by computerized prescriber order entry, an integrated electronic health record, automated dispensing cabinets, barcode medication administration and smart infusion pumps.

The central pharmacy serves all patients at HVMC 24 hours a day, 365 days per year in addition to providing service to seven other Tennessee-based Ballad Health facilities.

All pharmacists provide pharmaceutical care to patients through appropriate, accurate and timely dispensing of medications. In providing this care, pharmacists assess patient care requirements, provide clinical assessment of medication-related problems, assess, recommend and monitor medication regimens and review patient medical records for additional opportunities for intervention.

Decentralized pharmacists and clinical specialists provide additional direct patient care and are members of multi-disciplinary medical teams throughout HVMC. They collaborate with the medical team to optimize medication therapy and provide many services including:

Pharmacy services provided at HVMC include:

  • Appropriate drug therapy selection
  • Drug information
  • Drug stewardship
  • Interprofessional rounding
  • 24/7 emergency code participation and facilitation
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Patient medication discharge education
